PRINCIPAL'S NEWSLETTER AND NEW ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Spring 2021
Hello Academy and Barr families,
Welcome Spring!! There are so many things to share with you.
The most exciting news is that as of April 12, all students will be able to be 100% in school. If your chosen learning location is virtual, please continue to attend all classes via zoom. As a reminder, the zoom session will likely not be the entire class period, but should be for the first 10-15 minutes of the class. For students that will be in the building every day, please make sure to come prepared each day with your Chromebook, charger, and headphones. In-person students are expected to be in school every day. Access to zoom lessons will be limited to those learning 100% virtually. If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to email or call me.
Whether at home or in school, please note that our Wednesday bell schedule does not have an allotted time for advisory. Therefore, all students must be present and prepared for their first period class by 7:42am. For students that arrive in the building late any days M-F they must report to the attendance office to get a late pass and fill out a lunch slip if needed.
With more students attending in person each day, it is important to remember that there will be more cars dropping off/picking up and students riding the buses. We will continue to do our best to maintain safety protocols. However, with more bus riders, the ability to maintain social distancing will be difficult so students are reminded to wear masks properly and spread out on the bus as much as possible. As we increase the number of riders, there will be minor shifts in pick-up/drop-off times. Please allow a few additional minutes on both ends as we adjust our routes to accommodate all riders. Your patience and flexibility during the first few days is greatly appreciated.
Other routines within the building will remain the same. We will have safety protocols in place with a strict compliance with our district health/safety committee and the DOH. Classrooms are in the process of being prepared for more students. Student desks and chairs will be positioned less than six feet apart and barriers will be installed on every student desk. All staff and students will continue to wear masks at all times unless actively eating or drinking and will be encouraged to use hand sanitizer/wash hands frequently.
All students regardless of financial status are eligible for free lunches this year. All students are encouraged to take advantage of this. Wednesdays are a great way to do this, students can get a grab-n-go lunch to take home at dismissal.
The Nanuet Public Library now has Chromebooks and Hot Spots available for Nanuet Cardholders to borrow. If you ever need an extra device or stronger internet (or be able to do some homework outside while enjoying the Spring weather!) they have devices! If needed, please visit their website: https://nanuetpubliclibrary.org/borrow-a-device/
The NYS 3-8 assessments are right around the corner. We are happy to tell you that the test will be notably shorter, Math and ELA each being a 1 day test that is also condensed due to the omission of field test questions. The test will be given in person only and we will embed the schedule into one of the periods of a core class. More details will follow….
Stay safe and enjoy the beautiful weather this week. Thank you again for your hard work this year, together we have truly made amazing things happen!!
With great appreciation,
Anne Chen
NEW ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES FOR 5-6 ACADEMY AND BARR MIDDLE SCHOOL
Next Phase of Reopening (beginning Monday, April 12th)
100% Virtual OR 100% In person
In this next phase of reopening, with the exception of students that have chosen the fully virtual model, students will come to school Monday through Friday for in-person learning.
As a result, the following attendance procedures will be implemented:
- The zoom learning option will only be available for 100% virtual students based on the learning location chosen by each family.
- If a child is not present in class either in person or virtually, they will be marked absent. Please contact Kari Kresbeck at 627-4420 in our attendance office to inform the school of the absence.
- Because we are in-person 5 days a week, if a child is absent from in-person learning they cannot Zoom into the classroom. This is no longer an option.
- If a child is absent either virtually or in person they are expected to keep up with their day to day school work posted in Schoology.
The only exception to the above procedures is if a child is under a DOH quarantine, not caused due to travel restrictions. If a child is under a DOH quarantine due to exposure, they will be able to follow their scheduled classes via Zoom once the required documentation is received.
